Peace Palace

SDG House

In September 2018, the Peace Palace was officially designated SDG House by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. The Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace is committed to contribute to the fulfillment of all SDGs, with a specific focus on SDG16:

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted  by the United Nations in 2015 in order to provide an agenda for sustainable development for all countries – developed and developing. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are the successors to the Millennium Development Goals. The SDGs are subdivided into 169 concrete targets. More information about the Sustainable Development Goals can be found on the website of the United Nations.

For the first time, the SDGs set the promotion of a peaceful and just society, in which all citizens are involved, as a concrete goal for the future. This is Sustainable Development Goal 16, the goal that ties in closely with the ideal with which the Peace Palace was established.

SDG Charter
By signing the Sustainable Development Goals Charter, the Carnegie Foundation, owner and manager of the Peace Palace, has dedicated itself to promoting concrete peace activities.
The Peace Palace was established from the ideal that independent courts can settle disputes between states and thus prevent wars. Today, the United Nations International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Hague Academy of International Law are located in the Peace Palace. The Carnegie Foundation facilitates these institutions and manages the most prestigious library in the world in the field of international law.
The Peace Palace symbolises the worldwide ideal of ‘Peace through Law’ and ‘Peace through Dialogue’ and the Carnegie Foundation is actively engaged in translating this ideal into concrete steps. The organisation does this by bringing parties together and stimulating inclusive dialogue. Every year, more than 90 meetings and congresses take place at the Peace Palace.

SDG16 alliance
The Peace Palace can host and facilitate events within the framework of SDG16 as the Carnegie Foundation is also a member of the alliance of Dutch SDG16 institutions. More information can be found on the website of SDG Nederland (Dutch language).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, no events can be held at the Peace Palace. The Carnegie Foundation is open to consider the possibility of online events with partners.
